In July 2026 the Kerala government under Chief Minister V D Satheesan said direct export-import (EXIM) cargo operations at the Vizhinjam international seaport would begin on 18 August 2026. On that date Satheesan flagged off two containers from the port, which PTI reported as marking the commencement of EXIM operations.
