The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in eastern and southern India, with parts of Odisha under red alerts for intense rain from September 23 to 27. Squally winds up to 75 kmph are expected along the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast by September 24. Kerala may receive light to moderate rain until September 25, while Assam and Meghalaya will see thunderstorms starting September 22. Delhi-NCR is largely dry on Tuesday but could face weather activity from September 25 to 27. The system over the Bay of Bengal causes these changes.
Kurmis to be kept out of UCC, says West Bengal CM; promises to withdraw old cases
On September 20, 2026, Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal Chief Minister, announced the Kurmi community would be excluded from the Uniform Civil Code and that cases against them during protests for Scheduled Tribe status would be withdrawn. He promised to push for constitutional recognition of Kurmali and Rajbanshi languages and allocated ₹50 crore for the Kurmi Development Board. Adhikari criticized the previous Trinamool Congress government, accusing it of creating divisions within the community and selling natural resources.
