Whale filmed giving birth, with a little help from her friends

Why in news

Project CETI documented a rare instance of a sperm whale giving birth with assistance from other females, providing the first evidence of non-primate birth assistance.

Background

Project CETI, an international effort to understand whale communication, filmed a sperm whale named Rounder giving birth. The footage, published in Scientific Reports and Science, showed family members and unrelated females lifting and guiding the newborn calf.
