What the record shows
In June 2019 Narendra Modi said India was moving towards 'the goal' of a $5 trillion economy 'in the coming five years', and repeated the five-year horizon in his Independence Day speech that August; the Economic Survey 2019-20 framed it for 2025. In December 2023 Modi said GDP would exceed $3.75 trillion by the end of 2023-24, and the revised GDP series put FY2025-26 at about $3.93 trillion, per Swarajya. In August 2026 Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Rajya Sabha that IMF projections put GDP at around $5.1 trillion by 2028-29. The Wire argued successive deadlines had been missed.
