At a press conference on 18 November 2021, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a six-point plan to clean the Yamuna with a target of 2025, Deccan Herald reported. Delhi Pollution Control Committee data reported by the paper showed faecal coliform peaking at 4.9 million MPN/100 ml in September 2024, 1,960 times the standard, and BOD at the Najafgarh drain outfall rising to 127 mg/l by January 2025. During the 2025 campaign, Deccan Herald reported, Kejriwal acknowledged he could not fulfil the promise and said the river would be cleaned within two to three years if AAP returned.
