What the record shows
At the June 2015 launch of Housing for All, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cited a housing shortage of 2 crore units and said that by 2022 it was 'our responsibility to provide a house for everyone', in the PMO's account. Official figures compiled by PRS Legislative Research show 2.10 crore rural pucca houses completed under PMAY-Gramin by 2022, and 68 lakh urban houses by January 2023. The schemes' own targets, 2.95 crore rural houses and about 1.2 crore urban, were not reached by 2022; both were extended, and rural completions reached 2.61 crore by July 2024. The BJP's 2024 manifesto says more than 4 crore poor families have benefited.
