“Tap water connection to every rural household by 2024 (Jal Jeevan Mission / Har Ghar Jal)”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Jal Jeevan Mission from the Red Fort on 15 August 2019; the target of tap water for all rural households by 2024 was set in the July 2019 Union Budget speech by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Government data put coverage at 73.76% on 30 January 2024 (PIB) and 80% on 21 January 2025 (as compiled by PRS Legislative Research). In March 2026 the Union Cabinet extended the mission to December 2028, reporting 15.80 crore of 19.36 crore rural households (81.61%) connected.

“and so I declare from the Red Fort today that in the days to come, we will take forward the 'Jal-Jeevan' Mission. … We have promised to spend more than Rs. 3.5 lakh crores on this mission in the coming years.”
