“Implement a Uniform Civil Code across India (BJP Lok Sabha manifesto commitment, 2019 and 2024)”

A Uniform Civil Code was a commitment in the BJP's Lok Sabha manifestos of 2019, released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and 2024. Modi has backed it in his own words, saying on 15 August 2024 that 'it is time for the country to demand a Secular Civil Code'. No central law has been enacted. Instead, Uttarakhand's code took effect in January 2025, and the Gujarat, Assam and Madhya Pradesh Assemblies passed UCC bills in 2026. Home Minister Amit Shah said in September 2026 that the 21 BJP- and ally-ruled states would bring in a UCC before 2029. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called it 'dangerous' to diversity.

“Therefore, I assert that it is time for the country to demand a Secular Civil Code. … After 75 years of a Communal Civil Code, it is crucial to move towards a Secular Civil Code.”
