What the record shows

The BJP's 2024 Lok Sabha manifesto, released on 14 April 2024, promised simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had convened an all-party meeting on the idea in June 2019, and on 15 August 2024 urged parties to make 'One Nation One Election' a reality. The Cabinet accepted the Kovind committee's report in September 2024. Two bills were introduced on 17 December 2024 and referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, which was still examining them in 2026. Congress's Jairam Ramesh said the bill goes against the Constitution's basic structure.
